ELKINS, W.Va. — An Ohio man has been charged with attempted murder after trying hit a police officer and fleeing the scene.

Police said Kevin Strickland, 33, of Sunbury, Ohio, was stopped by an officer with the Elkins Police Department on March 27 for having non-working head light.
When Strickland admitted to having marijuana in the car the officer asked him to get out of the vehicle. Instead of exiting the vehicle Strickland sped away, police said.
Strickland then performed a U-turn and sped toward police in an effort to hit them. At that point, the officer said his only option was to jump behind the patrol car to save his life.
Strickland then drove through Elkins on Davis Avenue and Randolph Avenue at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour in an area posted at 25 miles per hour. While driving through the city recklessly he nearly hit several vehicles.
Strickland was arrested April 10 and charged with attempted murder and fleeing with reckless indifference. He is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $100,000 cash only bail.
