FAIRMONT, W.Va. –– A fisherman in Marion County made a grim discovery Friday afternoon.
Fairmont Police said the angler on his boat found a badly decomposed human body in the waters of the Monongahela River in Fairmont.
Police estimated the body had been in the water for weeks. The decomposition was so advanced it made it impossible to tell the body’s gender, race, or ethnicity.
The remains were transferred to the state Medical Examiner’s office in Charleston where an autopsy is expected to yield more clues on the person’s identity and how they died.
Fairmont Police said presently there are no missing persons cases who fit the time frame of this body.
