Morgantown fire claims two lives

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Two people were killed in a fire that took place Wednesday morning in Morgantown.

The blaze was in an abandoned house in the 700 block of Wells Street.

Firefighters from the Morgantown Fire Department responded at 8:26 and found heavy smoke obscuring the property and flames coming from the basement and first floor of the structure.

The fire was quickly extinguished.

Firefighters found the two bodies during a search of the structure after the smoke had cleared.

The address of 727 Wells Street had been condemned following a gas explosion last September that injured four WVU students. One of the students died weeks later at a burn center in Pennsylvania.

Wednesday’s fire is under investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s Office and local agencies.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury while working with a hydrant on the scene.
