Man charged for alleged threats to West Virginia elected officials

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man has been taken into custody for alleged threats to West Virginia elected officials over Twitter.

According to the state Department of Homeland Security, (DHS) Michael Edward Herman, 35, was taken into custody for making terroristic threats over his public Twitter account against officials as a result of  abortion legislation..

According to DHS, the recipients of the alleged threats include members of the West Virginia Legislature and all law enforcement officials that advocate for or enforce abortion bans. The Twitter posts also included intimidating language aimed at Governor Jim Justice, State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, and the Vice President of the United Stated States, Kamala Harris, relating to the passage and enforcement of abortion bans, DHR stated.

Coordination between the Capitol Police, the West Virginia Fusion Center, and the Romney Detachment of the West Virginia State Police led to a response, officials said.
