Federal courthouse in Wheeling named after judge

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — President Joe Biden has signed legislation naming the federal courthouse in Wheeling after a longtime judge.

Judge Frederick Stamp Jr. served as a district judge for the Northern District of West Virginia from July 1990 to November 2006, when he gained senior status. He was the court’s chief judge from 1994 to 2001.

Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., introduced the legislation to change the building’s name.

“In West Virginia, Judge Stamp is known for his commitment to service above self,” McKinley said in a Nov. 3 floor speech.

McKinley also noted Stemp’s humbleness, saying Stemp is not the person who would seek such recognition.

“He has been a steadfast and respected pillar of West Virginia, living there his entire life,” the congressman added.

Stamp served in the U.S. Army before becoming a private attorney. He also served on the West Virginia Board of Regents, the West Virginia Commission on Higher Education and in the West Virginia Legislature.
