CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Candidate filing period for the May primary election is underway.

Local, state and federal candidates are required to file a certificate of announcement and pay a filing fee with the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office or their county clerk’s office by midnight on Jan. 29.

“After overseeing a historic General Election in November 2020 and more than 100 municipal elections in 2021, our team and our county clerks are ready for the 2022 midterm elections,” Secretary of State Mac Warner. “I will do everything within my authority as the state’s chief election official to work with all 55 county clerks to ensure that our elections are safe, fair, and secure.”

Races on the ballot this year involve two U.S. House of Representatives districts; 17 seats in the West Virginia Senate; all 100 House of Delegates seats; and positions with county commissions, county boards of education and local conservation districts. Some voters will also vote on candidates for the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District and political party executive committees.

The West Virginia Legislature in October approved new districts for the U.S. House of Representatives, state Senate and House of Delegates. Voters will elect two people to serve in the congressional chamber; West Virginia lost a seat due to population changes in the last census. Reps. David McKinley and Alex Mooney are running in the Republican primary for the new 2nd District, while Rep. Carol Miller, R-W.Va., is seeking to represent the 1st District.

The primary election is scheduled for May 10.
