CHARLESTON, W. Va.–High school juniors across West Virginia have the opportunity to seek a full four-year scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan as part of the West Virginia Scholar Program.

The application period is open through April 30.

“It’s actually pretty easy,” Wesleyan Vice President of Enrollment Management John Waltz said. “They submit an application. They submit an essay reflecting on their work and what they would like to accomplish in the state of West Virginia.”

Walsh said students are also asked to submit some supporting materials like transcripts and test scores if they have them.

Walsh said the scholarship isn’t solely based on academics.

“Really we’re looking for the well-roundedness,” Waltz said. “These are all great students, of course, but we’re also looking for community service, religious and spiritual life, athletics, creative arts, anything these students are involved with.”

Waltz said they love reading a student’s full story.

ZMM Architects & Engineers is one of the longtime sponsors. Architect, Principal Adam Krason said during a Monday appearance on MetroNews “Talkline” a student’s life is never the same after being chosen as the winner of the West Virginia Scholar Program.

“When you consider the opportunities for higher education, to be able to attend a school like West Virginia Wesleyan is really life-changing,” Krason said.

Krason said many of the students stories are about overcoming obstacles. He said the program is open to all high school juniors.

“I hope students don’t think they shouldn’t apply for this because they are not number-1 academically in their class. The students who win this, oftentimes, has overcome a unique challenge, they are well-rounded students, they participate in their community. I really hope this year we get applicants from all over the state,” Krason said.

The sponsors for the West Virginia Scholar Program include title sponsor Greer Industries along with West Virginia International Yeager Airport, the West Virginia Hospital Association, ZMM Architects & Engineers, Friends of Coal and the West Virginia Farm Bureau
