Some retired state employees can anticipate a bigger check

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A few thousand retired state employees can anticipate a bigger check in the months ahead. Governor Jim Justice signed into law a measure which provides increased funding to state retirees.

The measure will provide a one-time payment of $1,500 to all state employees who reach age 70 by July 1, 2023 as long as they have 20 years of total service and monthly benefits are less than a thousand dollars. There are just over 5,000 who are in that bracket.

“The thing that is hard to believe is we’ve still got a bunch of retirees whose monthly payments are less than a thousand dollars. Making it today on less than a thousand dollars a month, I don’t know how they do it,” said the Governor.
