VOLGA, W.Va. –– West Virginia-based Allegheny Metallurgical, forecasts the creation of new high-paying jobs after powering up the company’s state-of-the-art longwall in Barbour County.
The company announced the advancement as a result of their recent $1 billion investment into the Volga mine site, facilities and employees.
“We have built a world-class team and facility here at Allegheny Met,” stated Eric Lipinski, Chief Operating Officer at Allegheny Metallurgical. “The restart of our longwall is confirmation of our commitment to the long-term success of Barbour County and West Virginia.”
Metallurgical coal is used in the steel production both in the United States and globally. Allegheny Metallurgical officials believe they’ll produce 3.5 million metric tons annually to supply steelmakers.
“We have one of the most innovative metallurgical coal operations in the world, right here in West Virginia,” Lipinski said. “The operation of the longwall reflects our investment in both advanced mining technology and our workforce.”
“The people who work here are second to none,” Lipinski said. “The hard work, commitment, and resilience of this group amazes me every day. I am so proud of what they have accomplished.”
Operations at the mine are based on a 28-day schedule with 14 days on and have 14 days off for workers, with seven of the 14 days off consecutive. The company also offers traditional schedules with a steady day shift, running Monday through Friday and every other Saturday.
