FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. — One man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Fayette County Saturday.
According to authorities, deputies and the Fayetteville Police Department were executing a warrant at the Fayette Hills Apartments on Laurel Creek Road when they discovered a man fleeing from the apartments, prompting them to pursue the subject on foot around the building.
Police say the man then entered back into his apartment, and immediately exited armed with a machete. They said he attempted to strike one officer with the weapon, but at the same time, deputies attempted to subdue the man with a taser.
When officers gave verbal commands for the man to drop the weapon and surrender, he attempted to strike the officers with the machete again, hitting one of the officers in the attempt.
Deputies then fired their weapons at the man as he continued to try and swing at them, but he was eventually shot and killed by one of the officers on the scene.
The West Virginia Police Department continues to investigate.
