THORNTON, W.Va. — A Taylor County woman is recovering from burns suffered in a weekend fire at her home in Taylor County.
According to the Grafton Fire Department, the victim lit a cigarette at her home around 4 a.m. Saturday. The spark touched off a flash fire in the residence. Firemen arrived to find the home had burned, but the fire was extinguished by another member of the household before they arrived.
The woman suffered significant burns. She was initially taken to Grafton City Hospital and then transferred to the West Penn Burn Center in Pittsburgh where she continues her recovery.
The state Fire Marshal and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection are investigating the fire. Authorities speculated over the weekend the home may have had methane gas which caused the lighter to ignite the fire throughout the room.
