CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Ross Hodge, head coach of University of North Texas men’s basketball, is a contender for the open vacancy with the Mountaineers, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Sources: North Texas’ Ross Hodge is a serious candidate for the HC vacancy at West Virginia.
The Mean Green are in the Final 4 of the Postseason NIT.
Nothing is final, but Hodge – who worked w/ WVU AD Wren Baker at UNT – is under strong consideration to replace Darian DeVries.

Hodge is finishing up his second season at the helm of North Texas men’s basketball. He served as an assistant with UNT from 2017 to 2023 under now Texas Tech head coach McCasland.
Former Mountaineer head coach Darian DeVries accepted the top job at Indiana University earlier this month.
Other potential candidates have continued to come off the board. Former Mountaineer assistant coach and Fairmont State men’s basketball coach Jerrod Calhoun is reportedly negotiating an extension to remain at Utah State, where he just wrapped up a 26-8 record and a first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament in his first season at the helm.
A number of major potential candidates are already off the board:
- Sean Miller is leaving Xavier for Texas
- Richard Pitino is reportedly leaving New Mexico for Xavier
- Ben McCollum is leaving Drake for Iowa
- Will Wade is leaving McNeese State for North Carolina State
Hodge is 46-23 in two seasons at North Texas. The Mean Green finished second in the AAC. Hodge accumulated a 146-24 record in five seasons between Paris JC and Midland College before making the jump to Division I as an assistant coach with Southern Miss for the 2011-12 season. He then went to Colorado State (2012-2016), Arkansas State (2016-17) and North Texas (2017-2023) as an assistant coach before his promotion following McCasland’s departure for Texas Tech.
