CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Weather Service has placed the lowlands of West Virginia under a winter storm watch and the higher elevations under a winter storm warning for Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to the weather service, “Confidence is low but rising for a winter mix event on Tuesday. Depending on where the warm air sets up will determine if we get more snow or more rain/freezing rain. As of now we expect 3 to 8 inches of snow (high end amounts confined to the NE WV mountains) where freezing rain could produce up to a 1/4″ inch of ice. Stay up to date on this one due to the potential volatility of the forecast.”
It’s been difficult for meteorologists to predict where the changeover will take place with the warmer air leaking in from the south.
The Eastern Panhandle is also under a winter storm watch from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday with mixed precipitation in the forecast.
The Morgantown area and the state’s Northern Panhandle appear less likely to receive a significant blow from this particular storm. The National Weather Service has placed those areas under a hazardous weather outlook.
