CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A second winter weather system in as many weeks is forecasted to hit the Mountain State this weekend and bring significant snowfall.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston tweeting out, “The atmosphere is quietly setting up for a snowstorm later this weekend, beginning with the arrival of colder air tonight and Friday. Depending upon the track of a low-pressure system, significant accumulating snow could occur Sunday into Monday.”
Simone Lewis, a NWS Charleston meteorologist told MetroNews while some details about the system are still in the air, most parts of the Mountain State will receive several inches of snow Sunday afternoon into early Monday morning.
“There are no parts of the state that are looking to miss it. It looks like everywhere is susceptible to snowfall this weekend into early next week,” she said.
NWS Charleston predicts between four to eight inches of snow in the Charleston area. Lewis said the amount of snow is dependent on the track of the system.
“So if the system does veer to the west and north of its current track, we will be seeing less snowfall accumulations across much of the lowlands,” Lewis said.
January 6 and 7, a winter storm system dumped more than 10 inches of snow in the Charleston area and the I-64 corridor, and even higher amounts in the mountainous portions of West Virginia.
By the time the weekend ended, the snow was gone as temperatures above freezing moved in with rain. Lewis said the forecast after the project system comes through is similar.
“By the time we get into Tuesday, we’re going to be looking at temperatures across much of the state in the mid-30s to possibly 40s again,” she said.
